Today the tallgrass prairie stands as the world’s best remaining example of a diminished ecosystem that is more endangered than the Amazon rainforest. Here the largest remnant of tallgrass prairie rests on the rolling landscape of the Flint Hills of Kansas. Tallgrass prairie, a sea of grass, once stretched from Manitoba to Texas, a landscape of almost unimaginable natural abundance. Heading west, Lewis and Clark came upon savannahs as far as the eye could see, covered with herds of bison, elk, pronghorn, and deer. Two fundamental ideas form the basis for the preferred alternative: (1) Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve has been established as a unit of the National Park System to preserve, protect, and interpret for the public a remnant of the once vast tallgrass prairie ecosystem, and (2) this remnant exists today because of a complex history of interaction between people and the land. The tallgrass prairie contains over 500 species of plants, of which 95 % are perennials. The majority of the canopy is less than 1 m tall. As productive as the tallgrass prairie appears on the surface, approximately 85% of vegetative biomass and 60% of net primary productivity actually occurs belowground. 2010-05-19 · Northern tallgrass prairie, once one of the Midwest’s largest and most biologically productive ecosystems, has been reduced to less than one-tenth of one percent of its original expanse and has become almost functionally extinct due to fire control and extirpation of keystone species.

Greater rain equals taller grasses. So if visiting in the spring, expect to see grasses up to 6 inches that continue to grow all year until they reach their maximum heights in late September/October. The preserve offers many opportunities to make a meaningful connection to the prairie and the people that lived here.
